A plain guide to vehicle financing

Three things decide your payment. Once you can see all three at once, the rest of the conversation gets a lot easier.

Vehicle financing gets described as complicated more often than it actually is. Most of the confusion comes from being shown one number, the monthly payment, and never being shown the three that produce it.

The amount financed

This is the vehicle price plus anything else rolled in. Taxes, fees, a warranty if you added one, and any negative equity carried over from a trade-in.

It is worth asking for this figure specifically. It is the honest size of the debt, and it is not always the number people quote you.

The term

The term is how long you are paying. Longer terms lower the monthly payment and raise the total cost, because interest runs for longer.

This is where a payment can look better than the deal behind it. Stretching a loan out will make almost anything fit a monthly budget. It also means carrying a balance for years, and it is the most common route into negative equity on the next vehicle.

The rate

The rate is what the lender charges for the loan. It comes from their assessment of risk, which takes in credit history, income, existing debts and the size of the loan against the value of the vehicle.

Auto loans generally price better than unsecured borrowing because the vehicle itself is security for the loan.

How they interact

Change one and the others move. A bigger down payment lowers the amount financed, which can shorten the term without raising the payment. A better rate can let you take a shorter term for the same money.

Looking at all three together is the whole skill. Looking at the payment alone is how people end up in a deal that fits this month and not the next four years.

What to ask for

Ask for the amount financed, the term, the rate and the total cost of borrowing. Any of those should be available without a fight. If a number is hard to get, that is information too.

We will show you the real numbers before you commit to anything.
