Changing vehicles when the current loan is not finished

Most people change vehicles part way through a loan. It is ordinary. What matters is knowing which of the three situations you are in.

The question comes up constantly and it gets treated as an obstacle when it is really just arithmetic. There are three possible situations and each one has a sensible next move.

Situation one: the vehicle is worth more than you owe

The difference is yours. It comes off the price of the next vehicle as a down payment, or you can take it in cash.

This is the comfortable case and it is more common than people expect, particularly if you put money down originally or took a shorter term.

Situation two: it is roughly even

The trade clears the loan and you start the next one fresh. Nothing to carry forward and nothing owing.

If you are close to even and there is no urgency, waiting a few more months puts you into situation one.

Situation three: you owe more than it is worth

The gap has to go somewhere. Usually it gets added to the next loan, which means financing more than the price of the vehicle you are buying.

That can be the right call if the vehicle you are in no longer works for you, and it is the wrong call if you are only changing because you fancy something different.

The honest test is whether the current vehicle is failing you or just boring you.

How you ended up there

Long terms are the usual reason. A vehicle loses value faster than a stretched loan pays down, so the two lines take years to cross.

A small down payment does the same thing. So does rolling a previous gap forward, which is how a shortfall grows across two or three vehicles.

What actually helps

A larger down payment closes the gap directly.

Waiting closes it on its own if nothing is wrong with the vehicle.

Choosing a shorter term on the next one stops it happening again, which matters more than most people realise at signing.

The number to ask for

Ask for your current payout figure, not your balance. They are slightly different and the payout is the real one.

Then ask what the vehicle is worth as a trade. Those two numbers together tell you which situation you are in, and everything else follows from that.
