The pre-purchase inspection is the cheapest thing in the whole process
It is the one expense in buying a used vehicle that reliably saves more than it costs, and it is the one people skip.
Nobody enjoys spending money before they own something. It is still the best value in the transaction, and by a wide margin.
What it is
An independent mechanic puts the vehicle on a hoist and goes through it properly. Brakes, suspension, steering, tyres, fluids, leaks, rust, the state of the underside, and a scan of the vehicle computer for stored fault codes.
It takes an hour or two and it produces a written list of what is wrong, what will be wrong soon, and roughly what each item costs.
Why it matters more than a test drive
A test drive tells you how a vehicle feels on a good day on a dry road. It does not tell you about rust in the subframe, a weeping rear main seal, or brake pads with a month left.
The scan matters particularly. Fault codes can be cleared shortly before a viewing, and a mechanic can tell whether the readiness monitors have been reset recently, which is a useful thing to know about a seller.
What it costs against what it prevents
An inspection is a small amount of money. A transmission, a head gasket or serious structural corrosion is thousands.
You only need it to catch one problem in a lifetime of buying vehicles for it to have paid for itself many times over.
Use an independent shop
Not one recommended by the seller. Not one with any relationship to the sale. You are paying for an opinion with nothing riding on the outcome.
If the vehicle cannot come to the shop, plenty of mobile inspectors will come to the vehicle.
What a refusal tells you
A private seller who will not allow an inspection has given you the answer. There is no good reason to refuse and several bad ones.
A seller who agrees readily is not necessarily selling a perfect vehicle. They are telling you they are not afraid of what will be found, which is most of what you needed to know.
How to read the report
Almost nothing comes back perfect and that is normal. Sort the list into what needs doing now, what needs doing this year, and what is cosmetic.
Then price the first two categories and take that number back into the conversation. An inspection that finds fifteen hundred dollars of work is not a reason to walk away. It is fifteen hundred dollars of information you did not have.
We handle inspections as part of the search, so you are not organising it yourself.
